Having released a pair of albums on Type Records, Merciless and Sufferers, Mike Shiflet has been having a bit of a clear out of material found in his attic. A series of releases were put up on his Bandcamp site collecting various experimental works and this mix was made from a collection of 3″ CDR’s that have been nagging away at him for some time. This seems to have precipitated a release of their own – Shiflet plans to release his own 3″ CDR, called The Open Door during the Summer on Under The Spire.
Mike had this to say about the mix: “With a capacity of just over twenty minutes, the three-inch disc is an ideal format for experimental music. While the majority or our LPs boast two roughly twenty minute side-long pieces, the three-inch made a perfect pre-downloadable-everything vehicle for putting single works without a B-side companion out into the world. Labels like Metamkine, Chondritic Sound, and P-Tapes dedicated the bulk of their catalogs to the format and artists such as Zbigniew Karkowski, Chop Shop, and Lionel Marchetti released some of the finest additions to their discographies on it. In recent years bandwidth availability and the rise of multiple online music delivery services have made had an even bigger impact on the use of and market for three-inch discs than they have its standard sized counterpart. One no longer needs the tiny media to publish that great one-off idea/sketch/composition/performance. The format still has its devotees, but there is absolutely no argument that its glory days are behind us at this point. With that in mind…”
