Altar of Plagues are ostensibly a black metal band, but they explore so many possibilities within the scope of their sound, that tag is becoming largely redundant. They’re in that enviable position of sounding like only themselves. Which is to say that alongside the fierce blast beats and elemental howls, they also include grinding industrial passages, dark ambient gloom, traditional folk melodies, a garage-like grit, plus this air of almost mythic contemplation – especially on their latest release, Mammal which has an almost operatic sense of grandeur.
To celebrate their upcoming rare UK shows (details here) they’ve put together a mix for us featuring bands that their vocalist and guitarist James acknowledges are all ‘pushing at the limits of their sound’. Perfect company, then.
